Build Your Routine
Most people don't need more products. They need the right three, used consistently, for long enough to work.
Here's how we'd build a routine from scratch — the same way we'd walk you through it in the clinic.
Start with three
- A cleanser that suits your skin. Not the one that makes your face feel squeaky — that's a stripped barrier, not clean skin. Gel or foaming for oily and congested skin; cream for dry, sensitive, or redness-prone skin.
- A broad-spectrum SPF, every single morning. Including winter. Including cloudy days in Muskoka. This is the highest-return product you will ever buy, and it protects the money you spend on everything else.
- One active, chosen for your main concern. Just one. Adding three at once is how people end up irritated and convinced medical-grade skincare "doesn't work for them."
Choosing your one active
| What's bothering you | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Fine lines, texture, general aging | A retinol — start at the lowest strength |
| Dark spots, uneven tone, sun damage | A brightening serum or vitamin C |
| Dullness and environmental damage | An antioxidant serum, used in the morning |
| Redness and sensitivity | A barrier-supporting serum before anything active |
| Congestion and breakouts | A gentle exfoliating step, two or three nights a week |
| The eye area | A dedicated eye product — the skin there is genuinely different |
Order of application
Morning: cleanse → antioxidant serum → moisturiser → SPF
Evening: cleanse → treatment serum or retinol → moisturiser
The rule is thinnest to thickest. Give each layer thirty seconds to settle.
Starting a retinol without wrecking your skin
This is where most people go wrong, so it's worth being specific.
- Start with the lowest strength available, not the one that sounds most effective.
- Use it two nights a week for the first two weeks. Then three. Build up over a couple of months.
- Apply to dry skin — damp skin increases penetration and irritation.
- A pea-sized amount for the whole face. More is not faster.
- Expect some dryness or flaking in weeks two to four. Expect burning, weeping, or raw skin never — if that happens, stop and contact us.
- Non-negotiable: daily SPF. Retinol without sunscreen is a step backwards.
How long before I see something?
Skin cells turn over roughly every 28 days. Most actives need three full cycles — about twelve weeks — before you can fairly judge whether they're working. Hydration changes you may notice in days. Texture and tone take months. Anyone promising faster is selling you something.
When to stop and ask
Stop using a product and get in touch if you have persistent stinging, swelling, a rash, or skin that feels raw rather than dry. Also check with us before starting anything new if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, on prescription acne medication, or booked for a treatment in the next two weeks.
